The seven-day ultimatum recently issued by Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) to shipping companies has been put on hold.
The Union suspended its threat to cripple the operations of shipping companies operating in the country over their refusal to negotiate a minimum standard for workers in the shipping branch.
According to a statement made available to the press, the President General, Comrade Adewale Adeyanju disclosed that the union had vacated the ultimatum as against the issuance to shipping companies to negotiate a minimum standard for workers in the shipping branch or face industrial action at the expiration of the notice if its demands are not addressed.
The statement reads that the strike was suspended followed the intervention and promise by the Nigerian Shippers Council (NSC) to resolve the issue. Stating that the Ministry of Transportation through the Nigerian Shippers Council has called for a meeting scheduled to hold on 13th April, 2023 at the NSC office in Lagos.
It reads in part “The Maritime Workers’ Union of Nigeria under the aegis of the President General, Comrade (Prince) Adewale Adeyanju has suspended the seven (7) day ultimatum for the refusal of Employers of labour in the shipping sector to negotiate the minimum standard for shipping labour industry.
“The suspension of the ultimatum by the Union is coming on the heels of Nigeria Shippers Council intervention on the said matter who has given strong indication to the Union on resolving the issue.
“The Ministry of Transport through the Nigeria Shippers Council has intervened and has called for a meeting scheduled for 13″ April, 2023 to hold at the Nigeria Shippers Council in Lagos.”
